ASTM B983 Inconel 725 UNS N07725 Seamless Pipe and Tube

Inconel 725 seamless pipe and tube combines the corrosion resistance associated with a nickel-chromium-molybdenum-niobium alloy with strength developed by precipitation hardening. The material is identified as UNS N07725 and is selected when corrosion, localized attack, sour-service exposure and high mechanical strength must be considered together.
SASA ALLOY reviews seamless pipe and tube requirements to ASTM B983. For an accurate quotation, state the outside diameter, wall thickness, length, quantity, final heat-treatment condition, inspection, certification and intended service environment.

Why Alloy 725 Is Used for Demanding Tubular Components
Alloy 725 is not simply a higher-strength version of a general nickel alloy. Its procurement condition and aging route are central to the final properties.
- Corrosion-resistant alloy system: nickel and chromium support resistance in reducing and oxidizing environments, while molybdenum improves resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion.
- Precipitation hardening: niobium and titanium enable high strength to be developed through controlled heat treatment instead of relying only on cold work.
- Sour-service relevance: the alloy is used where hydrogen sulfide, chlorides and carbon dioxide make material selection and hardness control important.
- Condition-sensitive acceptance: annealing, aging, cold work, hardness and final testing must match the purchase specification.
ASTM B983 Procurement Requirements
ASTM B983 covers high-strength seamless nickel-alloy pipe and tube, including UNS N07725. A complete purchase description should distinguish pipe from tube and define the required dimensional and heat-treatment route.
| RFQ item | Why it matters | Information to provide |
|---|---|---|
| Product designation | Pipe and tube may follow different dimensional conventions | State pipe or tube and the applicable dimensional basis |
| Size | OD and wall control pressure rating, machining allowance and component fit | OD, wall thickness, length and tolerances |
| Condition | Mechanical properties depend on cold work and heat treatment | Annealed, cold-worked, aged or project-specific condition |
| Testing | Pressure integrity, chemistry, mechanical properties and surface quality require defined acceptance criteria | Hydrostatic or NDE method, mechanical tests and supplementary examinations |
UNS N07725 Chemical Composition
The following limits identify the alloy. Actual heat-analysis values must be confirmed from the material test certificate supplied with the order.
| Element | Content, % | Function |
|---|---|---|
| Nickel | 55.0–59.0 | Base matrix and resistance to reducing environments |
| Chromium | 19.0–22.5 | Oxidizing-environment and general corrosion resistance |
| Molybdenum | 7.0–9.5 | Resistance to reducing media, pitting and crevice attack |
| Niobium | 2.75–4.0 | Precipitation strengthening |
| Titanium | 1.0–1.7 | Age-hardening response |
| Aluminum | 0.35 max. | Controlled precipitation-forming addition |
| Carbon | 0.03 max. | Controlled for corrosion and microstructure |
Heat Treatment and Property Control
Alloy 725 develops high strength through precipitation of the gamma double-prime phase during aging. A manufacturer bulletin describes solution annealing near 1040°C followed by controlled aging, but the final cycle must follow ASTM B983, the ordered condition, section size and project requirements.
Do not order this material only by grade and dimensions. State the required final condition, hardness or mechanical-property acceptance, whether aging is completed before delivery, and any sour-service qualification.
Inspection and Documentation Options
- Heat analysis confirming UNS N07725 chemistry.
- Tensile strength, yield strength, elongation and hardness in the ordered condition.
- Outside diameter, wall thickness, length, straightness and visual surface inspection.
- Hydrostatic testing or nondestructive electric testing as required by the applicable specification.
- Eddy-current, ultrasonic, PMI or additional project inspection when specified and agreed.
- Heat-number traceability, material test certificate and heat-treatment records.
Typical Applications
- High-strength tubular components for sour oil and gas production.
- Downhole and subsea components exposed to chloride- and hydrogen-sulfide-containing environments.
- Marine components requiring localized-corrosion resistance and high strength.
- Machined pressure-containing parts produced from heavy-wall tube where the drawing and qualification route specify N07725.
Suitability depends on pressure, temperature, process fluid, H2S partial pressure, chloride level, heat treatment, hardness and component design. The alloy designation alone does not establish service approval.
Inconel 725 Pipe vs. Inconel 725 Bar
Pipe and tube are ordered by outside diameter, wall thickness, length and pressure-integrity testing. Bar is solid material ordered by diameter or section size for machining and forging. If your component requires solid stock, review our Inconel Alloy 725 bar page instead of specifying pipe dimensions.
FAQ
What ASTM standard covers Inconel 725 seamless pipe and tube?
ASTM B983 covers precipitation-hardened or cold-worked seamless nickel-alloy pipe and tube, including UNS N07725. State the required edition, product designation, dimensions, condition and supplementary tests on the purchase order.
Is Alloy 725 the same as UNS N07725?
UNS N07725 is the formal material designation associated with Alloy 725. Include both names and ASTM B983 in the RFQ to avoid grade or product-form ambiguity.
