AISI 8620 Alloy Steel Bar
AISI 8620 alloy steel bar is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum carburizing steel with a low carbon content that allows for excellent case hardening. After carburizing and heat treatment, the bar achieves a hard, wear-resistant surface layer while maintaining a tough and ductile core.
This unique combination of surface hardness and core toughness makes AISI 8620 alloy steel bar a preferred material for heavy-duty mechanical components subjected to high wear and fatigue stress. It also features good machinability, weldability, and heat treatment response, ensuring reliability in demanding applications.

8620 Steel Heat Treatment |
AISI 8620 alloy steel responds well to heat treatment and can be processed through either quenching or normalizing, depending on the required mechanical properties for its application. During quenching, the steel is heated above its critical temperature and then rapidly cooled in oil or water to achieve high hardness and strength. In contrast, normalizing involves heating the material above the critical point followed by slow cooling in still air, producing a more uniform grain structure and balanced toughness. With subsequent tempering, SAE 8620 can deliver a wide range of tensile strengths, typically from about 545 MPa (79 ksi) up to 795 MPa (115 ksi).
FAQ |
Q1: What is 8620 alloy steel equivalent to?
A1: SAE 8620 steel is equivalent to EN362 steel, which is its grade under the previous BS 970: 1955 standard
Q2: What is SAE 8620 steel?
A2: The SAE8620 steel is a case-hardening steel consisting of chromium, nickel, and molybdenum as the alloying elements. It has good toughness and strength properties and higher core strength than grades 8615 and 8617.
Q3: What is 8620 used for?
A3: 8620 has a high case toughness and above-average core toughness due to the nickel content. Additionally, it is the most widely used carburizing alloy steel. Typical uses include gears, cranks, shafting, axles, bushings, heavy-duty pins, bolting, springs, hand tools, gears, and many other machinery parts.
