Nickel Alloy Plate PMI, MTC and Traceability

For corrosion-resistant and high-temperature projects, an alloy name alone is not sufficient. Procurement should connect the purchase order, heat number, material certificate, product marking and inspection record to the delivered plate.

Key point: PMI is a useful identification check, but it does not replace a material test certificate or prove every mechanical, heat-treatment and corrosion requirement.

Three Records Buyers Should Distinguish

Why PMI Has Limits

Handheld XRF is widely used to identify many nickel, chromium, molybdenum and copper-bearing alloys. However, method capability depends on the instrument and element. Carbon and some light elements may require another method, so PMI should not be treated as proof of low-carbon grade, heat treatment or mechanical properties.

This matters when comparing grades such as Alloy 625, Alloy 718, C276, Alloy 400, Nickel 200 and Nickel 201. Similar-looking plate can have very different environmental limits, fabrication behavior and specification requirements.

Recommended Inspection Sequence

  1. Review the purchase specification, grade, product form and condition.
  2. Match the plate marking and heat number to the MTC.
  3. Check chemistry and mechanical results against the ordered specification.
  4. Perform PMI at agreed locations when required.
  5. Record dimensions, surface, edge condition and identification.
  6. Maintain mark transfer after cutting and packing.

For H2S-containing oil and gas environments, material selection and qualification must be evaluated against the actual service conditions and the applicable ISO 15156/NACE MR0175 requirements. A generic alloy certificate alone does not establish suitability for a sour-service project.
