Nickel 200 vs Nickel 201 Wire: Carbon Content, Temperature and Application Selection

Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 are commercially pure wrought nickel grades used where corrosion resistance, electrical performance and controlled fabrication behavior are important. Their main practical difference is carbon control, which affects selection for elevated-temperature service.

Why Carbon Content Matters

The lower carbon level of Nickel 201 reduces the risk of graphitization-related embrittlement during prolonged exposure in certain elevated-temperature ranges. Nickel 200 remains widely used at lower and moderate temperatures where its chemistry and properties meet the design requirement.

Selection should use the governing material specification, maximum operating temperature, exposure time, atmosphere and fabrication route.

Corrosion Resistance and Applications

Both grades offer useful resistance in many neutral and reducing environments and are commonly considered for caustic alkali handling. Performance depends on concentration, temperature, aeration, contaminants and stress. Typical enquiries include electrical leads, chemical-processing components, wire forms and corrosion-resistant assemblies.

Which Grade Should You Choose?

  • Choose Nickel 200 when the temperature and fabrication route permit standard commercially pure nickel.
  • Choose Nickel 201 when low carbon is required for the specified elevated-temperature exposure.
  • Do not substitute grades without reviewing temperature, chemistry and certification.
